Troubleshooting
The agent does not have offprompt
- Claude Code asks before it starts a server a project declares. Run
/mcpto see whether offprompt is listed and approved. - Codex and Pi read a project's config only in a project you trust.
- Check that
tools/offprompt/mcp.mjsand the agent's file are in the project, as Installation lists them, and thatnodeis on thePATHthe agent sees. npx offprompt listshows which agents offprompt found, and where each is set up.
"no project to write to"
offprompt was started outside a project, and the agent's host named no workspace. Set offprompt's
working directory (cwd) to the project in the agent's MCP settings. See
Where the project is.
No page opened
When offprompt cannot open a browser, it gives the agent the link to show you, and the result says why. On Linux with no display, offprompt takes itself to be in a sandbox, and the agent passes you a sandbox link instead.
The link from a sandbox does not open
-
A
127.0.0.1link means offprompt started no tunnel, because:- the sandbox sends its traffic through an HTTP proxy, which
cloudflaredignores, or the tunnel did not reach offprompt within 20 seconds; OFFPROMPT_TUNNEL=offis set;- there is no
cloudflaredonPATH, and the pinned download failed, or no release is pinned for the platform, as on Windows. offprompt says why only on its stderr.
The link opens only if your tool forwards that port to your machine as
localhostor127.0.0.1; if it forwards it under another number, change the port in the link. Forwarding under the vendor's own hostname, such as*.app.github.dev, is refused with 421 "Wrong host". Otherwise turn on port forwarding, or allow outbound connections to Cloudflare, and ask the agent to try again. - the sandbox sends its traffic through an HTTP proxy, which
-
A link is good for 30 minutes and one write. After that, ask the agent to try again.
The write button stays off
The button says what is left: "Fill 3 values to write", "Fix 1 value to write". Look for red lines
under the fields. If the file is tracked by git, tick the override by the button, or ask the agent
to write to a file git ignores. From a sandbox, the button stays off when the link lost its #k=
part; open the link exactly as the agent gave it.
The page says it is reconnecting
offprompt stopped answering, usually because the agent quit or restarted it. Your values stay on the page, and nothing is written until offprompt is back. A request lives only in the process that made it, so after a restart, ask the agent to ask again.
The request expired
A request lives five minutes, or 30 minutes from a sandbox. Ask the agent to ask again; it gets a new page.
A value is refused for the file
A .env cannot hold every string exactly: one with a single quote together with a double quote or a
backslash has no form dotenv reads back unchanged. The page says so under the field. Ask the agent to
write that value to a file of its own, with a file sink.
The fingerprints differ
The file holds something other than what you typed. Look at the file yourself; do not ask the agent to open it.
The call ends while you are still typing
An agent's own tool timeout can end the call before the request does. npx offprompt init sets
offprompt's timeout to 330 seconds where the agent takes one; set it by hand in a config you wrote
yourself. The page stays live either way, and the agent can pick the request up with
await_secret.
